Living with a negative body image can feel like a constant internal battle. When you are dissatisfied with your body it can be easy to focus on what you wish was different- examining every flaw, comparing yourself to unrealistic standards, and feeling disconnected from your own reflection. This ongoing self-criticism can erode your confidence, leaving you trapped in a cycle of shame and discomfort. If this sounds familiar, therapy can help you rebuild a healthier, kinder relationship with your body, free from judgment and filled with self-compassion.
What is Body Image?
Your body image refers to the way that you experience your body, as well as your assumptions about how others people perceive your body. Body dissatisfaction may focus on appearance, but it can also focus on the your perceptions of the capabilities or failures of your body. A negative perception of your body can lead to isolation, low-self esteem, critical self-talk, anxiety, and changes in your behavior in an attempt to alter your appearance. You may also notice that you are avoiding things that bring attention to your body or remind you of how your body has changed. Those who experience high levels of frustration with their bodies and find themselves stuck in patterns of self-blame or self-judgement that impact their self-confidence.
