SOUND FAMILIAR? THERAPY FOR DISORDERED EATING CAN HELP.

What is Disordered Eating?

Disordered eating is defined as a pattern of irregular or inconsistent eating habits that have a negative impact on your physical and emotional health but do not meet criteria for a clinical eating disorder. If you're struggling with disordered eating, you may notice that your eating patterns are driven by emotional triggers, stress, boredom, or other factors, rather than hunger or fullness. This may include patterns of behavior like emotional eating, over eating, chronic dieting, impulsive eating, inconsistent or unbalanced meals, or even difficulty prioritizing meals throughout the day. Those who struggle with emotional eating often feel like they don't have control over their eating habits and struggle with feelings of guilt and self-judgement related to their behaviors around food. Over time, disordered eating can have significant consequences on one's mental and physical health, body image, and relationships.

Signs and Symptoms of Disordered & Emotional Eating

  • You have a hard time prioritizing consistent or balanced meals during the day
  • You notice "all or nothing" patterns in your eating habits
  • Your eating habits are often following by guilt, regret, or self-criticism
  • You often turn to food for comfort, stress relief, or to numb difficult feelings
  • You feel like your eating habits are impulsive, unpredictable, or our of your control
  • You eat large amounts of food in one sitting, even when you aren't physically hungry
  • Your eating habits are having a negative impact on your self-esteem, body image, or relationships
  • You have a hard time identifying or listening to your "hunger cues" (hunger and fullness)

How Therapy for Disordered & Emotional Eating Can Help

At Embodied Empowerment, we take an individualized, holistic approach to treating disordered eating. Our therapists will use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness to help you challenge negative thoughts around food, build tools to create a more healthy relationship with eating, and become more attuned to the needs of your body. Our goal is to help you create lasting, positive change—moving away from dieting cycles and disordered eating behaviors, and toward a life of balance, health, and well-being.
